Set of 20 hand-colored gouache engravings by Pierre Albert Leroux*, a renowned painter popular for his military depictions that illustrated numerous books at the beginning of the century.
These gouache engravings are countersigned in the lower right corner, possibly by the artist himself.
Dating from the 1930s, the colors are fresh and vibrant.
They depict soldiers from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, including the 18th century and the grand era of Napoleon I's empire.

*Born in Versailles on November 10, 1890, to a father who was a stockbroker's clerk, Pierre-Albert Leroux began his artistic training at the Versailles municipal drawing school.
In 1910, he applied to the École des Beaux-Arts.
He studied there for three years. He studied under Cormon and Laurens, the two great masters of history painting. Called up for military service, he completed his service as a musician in 1913.
But on August 2, 1914, he was sent as a stretcher-bearer to the 1st Engineer Regiment, 22nd Company.
He remained in this position throughout the war.
