Current Kutani porcelain is based on the early 19th century revival of the original Kutani porcelain which was made from the mid 17th century for several decades in the village of Kutani located in the south of Ishikawa Prefecture.
Later, this porcelain rose to fame when it was exhibited at the 1873 World's Fair and was then exported for a time to the West.
Kutani porcelain is characterized by its technique of layering in thick layers of five colors which are red, yellow, green, purple and indigo and its bold representations of the beauties of nature, and has evolved into the one of the decorated ceramic forms "Iroe" typical of Japan.
