Born in 1881 in Montfort-sur-Risle, René Sautin belongs to that generation of Norman painters who transformed their native land into a veritable laboratory of light and modernity. Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Rouen in Philippe Zacharie’s studio, then in Paris under Gabriel Ferrier, he received early encouragement from Albert Lebourg, a fellow Norman and a leading figure of Norman Impressionism.
Having settled in Les Andelys in 1911, Sautin found his most intimate source of inspiration along the banks of the Seine: Château-Gaillard, the quays of Petit-Andely, the barges gliding across the water… These were all subjects he revisited tirelessly, with vibrant sensitivity and a unique expressive power. He frequented the Pissarro sons, Signac, Luce, Derain, and Lebasque, who came to paint in the region—a vibrant artistic circle that fueled his stylistic evolution.
Around 1923, Sautin abandoned the Impressionist style to embrace a calm and measured Fauvism, characterized by bold colors, generous impasto, and decisive brushstrokes. “To paint is to spread paint,” he said, championing a powerful, sensual, and deeply embodied style of painting. This stylistic maturity, achieved as early as the 1920s, fully blossomed in the 1950s, when his work gained in intensity and monumentality.
A proud, sensitive artist, sometimes misunderstood in his own time, René Sautin leaves behind a body of work of great coherence, in which Normandy appears transfigured by color and emotion. His landscapes, of rare power, reflect a deeply personal vision—one that continues to move collectors and art lovers alike.
