19th-century Carved Wooden Panels With Religious Themes
19th-century carved wooden panels with religious themes, part of a chapel’s furnishings: choir stalls, a confessional, or a sacristy door.
The first panel depicts a scene featuring a bishop’s crozier: the curved staff in the center, a symbol of the bishop’s pastoral authority; an urn at the bottom with decorative tassels; a burning torch; and a scroll with an inscription in Latin or Old French; liturgical vestments painted in green and gold; and a rose window.
The second panel depicts: a water pitcher and basin at the top, used for liturgical ablutions; a chalice and paten surmounted by a cross, representing the Eucharist; a censer at the bottom with its chains, for burning incense; carved vine leaves and grape clusters, another Eucharistic symbol
Both panels are in high relief with traces of polychromy. Their vertical format and identical style indicate that they formed a set, perhaps on either side of a door or an altar.
