19th-century China. Portable Document Case
Scholars in the Middle Kingdom have always surrounded themselves with precious and useful objects related to their duties.
This portable box—the true predecessor of the briefcase—is designed to carry documents; compartments are provided for this purpose, and the drawers of various sizes hold a few small items.
Entirely covered in red lacquer, the drawer door is decorated with a carved scene depicting a dignitary having a look on a banner held out to him by one of his peers, while two other figures appear to be brandishing weapons.
On the reverse side of the door, inscriptions are written in calligraphy.
In generally good condition,strong, though note some cracks, small areas of loss, and the absence of a key.
This small cabinet will look very elegant on a desk or a console table.
