Luba-hemba Sanza

A magnificent monoxylous anthropomorphic sanza (lamellophone), retaining its five original metal keys, originating from the Luba-Hemba region (southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo).

The instrument transcends its musical function to become a true sculptural work of art: the soundbox extends harmoniously into a female figure seated on her heels, with her hands resting gracefully on her thighs. The face, with its delicate features and elongated "coffee bean" eyes, expresses a profound serenity. A symbol of lineage, the prominent umbilicus is finely highlighted by a network of raised scarifications.

The coiffure, carefully drawn back, illustrates the refinement of the elaborate "cascade" hairstyles typical of the Shankadi, neighbors of the Luba and Hemba. It culminates gracefully in an elegant quadrilobed chignon. The piece, remarkably preserved, boasts a superb patina of use that bears witness to the many handling by the musician.
