Secretary Desk, 19th-century Mahogany With Freestanding Columns
Empire-Style Writing Desk with Detached Mahogany Columns – 19th Century
An elegant Empire-style drop-leaf secretary desk in mahogany and mahogany veneer, resting on four imposing freestanding columns with chiseled and gilded bronze rings. It is topped with an original black marble top.
The front is adorned with remarkable, finely chiseled gilded bronze work, featuring a river god at the center, as well as rich appliqués depicting winged women in the upper corners. The piece is of superb craftsmanship.
The hinged top, upholstered in its original leather with gilded decoration, reveals a refined interior comprising six small drawers, a central drawer, a niche, and a large drawer in the upper section. The lower section opens via two doors, enclosing a spacious storage area.
This secretary desk is equipped with a double-cylinder lock—a sophisticated locking system—and retains its beautiful bronze hardware.
The veneers display a superb grain pattern, characteristic of fine Empire-style furniture. The proportions are harmonious, and the quality of the cabinetmaking is remarkable.
The piece is in excellent condition, featuring a beautiful patina and ready to take its place in a classic or contemporary interior.
