Antique Sciacca Coral Pendant, 19th Century
An elegant 19th-century medallion pendant, a superb example of goldsmithing and engraving from the second half of the 19th century.
The piece centers on a magnificent oval cameo carved from genuine Sciacca coral, characterized by its unmistakable and precious intense, warm orange hue, typical of the historic geological deposits discovered off the Sicilian coast during the 19th century. The cameo is finely hand-carved in high relief and depicts the classic, noble profile of a female figure, with rich and well-defined details of her hairstyle. The back of the cameo, left visible by the setting, displays the typical natural texture and biological inclusions that attest to the authenticity of the Sicilian fossil coral.
The central cameo is set within a sculptural coral frame featuring organic motifs: a splendid Baroque-style garland richly carved with vine leaves in high relief, evoking the classicism of Dionysian motifs.
The elaborate supporting structure is crafted from original, period princisbecco. The front features a stunning filigree twisted cord design that encircles the piece, topped by a majestic torchon-woven counter-mesh.The back of the pendant reveals craftsmanship of the highest quality: a protective “cage” structure composed of four shaped princisbecco plates, entirely hand-decorated with refined burin engravings featuring botanical and geometric motifs. This technique served to provide structural stability to the substantial coral garland, minimizing stress on the stone.
