Portrait Of A Lady In A Silk Dress - 18th-century English School
An important antique oil painting on canvas depicting a refined half-length portrait of a noblewoman, of British cultural origin (English School) and precisely datable to the mid-18th century (circa 1740–1750).The painting stands out for its remarkable rendering of the textile details typical of Georgian haute couture of the period. The noblewoman is portrayed with soft, natural features and wears a sumptuous white silk gown featuring wide gathered sleeves and a neckline embellished with fine lace. Her figure is accentuated by a stiff bodice embellished with blue embroidery and complemented by a light, matching cape in pastel shades. On her head she wears the classic period headdress of light lace ("mob cap"), finely tied under the chin with a light blue ribbon. The work adopts the typical formal composition and color palette of the masters active in the English portraiture market of the 18th century. The frame, which is made of gilded wood, is from a later period (not contemporary with the painting). The work retains its original patina and the authentic charm of portraits from a bygone era.
