Bloc Sideboard By Charlotte Perriand For Steph Simon, Cansado 1962
Artist: Charlotte Perriand
Four-door "Bloc" sideboard designed by Charlotte Perriand for the mining town of Cansado, Mauritania, circa 1962.The top and interior shelves are made of mahogany, the base and legs of black lacquered sheet metal, and the doors of white, gray, and black melamine. The design is based on a graphic interplay of sliding panels, a characteristic feature of the furniture designed by Charlotte Perriand for the interiors of Cansado. The left side features a drawer labeled “Modèle Charlotte Perriand Breveté S.G.D.G.”This four-door model is a less common version of the Cansado sideboard. According to period documentation, it was intended for the homes and offices of the mining company’s executives.
