Portrait of a gentleman painted by an artist of the French school in the early 18th century.

With its high-quality modeling, rich drapery, and understated composition, this work follows in the tradition of the great Parisian portraiture of the late reign of Louis XIV and the early Regency, exemplified notably by Hyacinthe Rigaud.

The subject is depicted in a bust portrait, wearing a rich red coat and a long wig, in keeping with the conventions of early 18th-century French aristocratic portraiture.

Oil on oval canvas, re-stretched.

Canvas dimensions: 43 × 34 cm.
Dimensions with frame: 53 × 46 cm.

Presented in its antique, richly carved and gilded wooden frame, preserved with the artwork.

Condition

Re-stretched, with previous restorations; some slight wear and minor signs of use consistent with its age.

The photographs, taken under various lighting conditions, are an integral part of the description.
