Crucifix Sundial, England, 18th Century
A large sundial made of wood and paper, shaped like a crucifix or a cross.
The sundial is unsigned but English in origin, with its four cardinal points represented by the letters W, S, O, and N.
This fixed sundial, designed for use at a single latitude, was likely intended for use in a church, convent, or monastery.
The cardinal points, with the aid of a compass, allow the sundial to be oriented correctly.
The hour lines are inscribed on the inside of the dial, divided into 5, 1–3, 6–10, 3–6, 9–12, and 2.
The sundial was mounted on a wooden stand.
The entire structure measures 36 cm in height, with sides measuring 14.5 x 12.5 cm at their widest points
