Antique Restoration-era Clock In Gilded Bronze, White Marble, And Sea-green Marble – Signed
19th-century antique clock (Directoire / Empire / Restoration style).
The main figure, finely chiseled and gilded in bronze, depicts an allegorical and mythological scene: a woman in ancient drapery seated on a curule stool decorated with Greek motifs, cutting the wings of a Cupid with a pair of scissors. This powerful symbolism evokes captive Love or fidelity.
The base is a magnificent architectural composition crafted from carved white marble and Vert de Mer (or Alpine green) marble, adorned with ovate friezes and resting on four gilded and chiseled bronze spindle-shaped feet.
Materials: Gilded bronze (original gilding), white marble, veined green marble.
Dial: White enamel with Roman numerals for the hours, cut steel hands in the Directoire/Empire style. Double winding mechanism.
Movement: Paris movement, wire suspension (typical of the first half of the 19th century).
Signature / Hallmark: The mechanism on the back is signed by the master clockmaker in an oval cartouche: “HERSANT SEJR de CHATELAIN PARIS” with hand-engraved workshop numbers (12–19).
