Silver Sundial - Butterfield, 1680–1690
Artist: Michael Butterfield
An octagonal horizontal silver sundial signed “Butterfield à Paris” and dating from around 1680–1690.
The dial, of a handsome size, measures 7.9 × 6.8 cm. There is a hallmark on the back that we have been unable to identify, but which appears to resemble the Parisian hallmarks from the years 1688–1687 or 1687–1691. The dial has retained its original fish-scale-pattern case, lined with green velvet.
The plate is engraved with four hour scales for latitudes “43,” “46,” “49,” and “52” degrees, in Roman or Arabic numerals.
The gnomon featuring a bird is height-adjustable to accommodate latitudes ranging from 40 to 60 degrees.
Very beautiful engraving, quite intricate.
On the back, the names and latitudes of 31 French and European cities.
The tabs that secure the compass to the back have been restored; otherwise, it is in beautiful original condition.
Rare in its case.
