Under a mat and patinated giltwood frame and mirror (29.8 x 23.7 cm). An intermediate project for the frontispiece of Le Livre des parfums? It seems to be an earlier version than the one chosen for printing, judging by some differences between the two - for example, above the armorial shield is a crown adorned with flowers, replaced in the final version by a basket adorned with the same flowers; (The words of the motto under the shield are not arranged in the same order.) "Lithographer, printer, 'inventor of the modern poster,' draftsman, painter, decorator, friend of Huysmans, Rodin, and Bourdelle, collected by Seurat, admired by Signac and Manet, Jules Chéret (1836-1932) is a prominent figure in the artistic and literary circles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. […] His meeting with the perfumer Eugène Rimmel, for whom he illustrated *Le Livre des parfums* and the numerous labels and vignettes intended for the packaging of cosmetic products, marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration. In 1866, Jules Chéret returned to Paris and set up his lithographic printing press thanks to funds loaned by Rimmel."
