Exceptional Bressand Sideboard With Clock, Made Of Oak And Burl, Louis XV Style, 18th Century
Exceptional Bresse sideboard with clock, made of oak and burl wood – Louis XV period, 18th century
A rare and exceptional Bresse sideboard with clock from the Louis XV period, crafted from solid oak and richly decorated with burl veneers. This monumental piece, emblematic of 18th-century Bresse cabinetmaking, is a prestigious piece of furniture, authentic examples of which have become extremely rare today.
The lower section opens with three drawers and three doors, offering ample storage space. The upper section features two closed side compartments and an elegant display case with scalloped shelves designed to hold earthenware, pewter, or glassware. At its center sits a superb cock-crowing clock, featuring an enameled dial with Roman numerals and a richly detailed openwork bronze pediment, which serves as the pièce de résistance of the entire piece.
The decoration is remarkable for its fine craftsmanship. The magnificent burl wood panels display spectacular grain patterns, while the carvings of shells, scrollwork, and dynamic moldings attest to the expertise of the master cabinetmakers of Bresse. Also featured are the famous interlaced hearts and figure-eight knots—symbolic motifs unique to Bresse furniture, evoking love, fidelity, and eternity. These ornaments were traditionally reserved for wedding furniture and the region’s finest pieces.
With its imposing proportions, the quality of its craftsmanship, and its remarkable state of preservation, this sideboard is a museum-quality piece. Large 18th-century Bresse furniture of this caliber is highly sought after today and is rarely found on the art market.
An exceptional piece destined for a stately home, a major collection, or a connoisseur of first-rate regional French furniture.
