Gilded Bronze Empire-style Clock Featuring Venus, Blind Cupid, Anteros, And Renous; Paris, 19th Century
Clock in finely chased gilded bronze depicting the goddess Venus seated by a hearth, surrounded by blind Cupid (Eros) searching for his bow and quiver, and his brother Anteros* hiding an arrow from her; enameled dial with Roman numerals and a calendar framed by two Vestal Virgins holding palm fronds; base decorated with swans and a garland of foliage; First Empire period, early 19th century.
This clock is in good condition and is of remarkable quality. The dial is signed by the clockmaker Renaux in Paris andfeatures a date display (calendar). The string-wound movement is in working order and has been serviced (we have its key and the balance wheel).
Please note: the gilding is worn in places (take a close look at the photos), there are a few small chips on the dial near the winding holes, and there is wear and scratches from age; see photos.
* Eros and Anteros
According to several mythological accounts, Venus is said to have given Eros a brother, as Eros, out of boredom, had stopped growing. His name is Anteros, literally “Love Returned,” and he symbolizes reciprocal love, which grows stronger and deepens when it is reciprocated.
