Trained by Henri Harpignies, Georges René Villain (1854–1930) exhibited at the Salon in Paris. He painted numerous landscapes, particularly in Normandy and Paris. This watercolor depicts vendors of the four seasons. They were often women, as is the case in this watercolor. These women sold fruit, vegetables, or ice cream and transported their goods using handcarts, setting up shop in the streets and public places.
