Artist: Pierre Delamare

*******************
Pewter pitcher with a stepped shoulder, flared base, straight-sided cup, and thumbhole with tassels.
Hallmark: Crowned C / (CA)VDEBEC / (1691 or 1701).
Heavily worn hallmark of Pierre DELAMARE, who became a master craftsman in the early 18th century.
Calibration hallmark featuring a lily.
Height: 19.5 cm.
CAUDEBEC-EN-CAUX, first half of the 18th century
Of rare provenance, in very good condition.
It is worth noting that these pitchers served as wine measures during the Ancien Régime.
The capacity of those used in inns, taverns, etc., was supposed to be periodically inspected by royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure “fair measure” for the consumer, but in fact, these regulations were rarely enforced, and pitchers bearing calibration marks are quite rare.
