Vermeil Ewer With Tray. Italy, 20th Century.
Vermeil (gold-plated silver) set consisting of a water pitcher and its tray
Baluster-shaped water pitcher resting on a circular pedestal decorated with a frieze of pearls and rope. The bulging body is embellished with twisted gadroons halfway up. The neck, which narrows and then flares at the top, forms a wide opening finished with a scalloped rim and a broad spout, accented by a frieze of rope and twisted godrons.
The imposing handle, with three attachment points, is formed of volutes and counter-curves, richly carved with rocaille motifs and acanthus leaves.
Echoing the ewer’s decoration, the circular tray rests on a discreet base. It features a slight central depression surrounded by domed gadroons in radiating twists, while the rim is accented by a rope-motif frieze.
