George III-era mahogany cutlery case. England, late 18th century. This case features a curvilinear shape and is crafted from burl mahogany veneer; its edges are adorned with marquetry friezes alternating light and dark wood. The lid is sloped to allow for a harmonious display of the cutlery inside. The underside of the lid is decorated with a marquetry compass rose. The interior is designed to hold 24 pieces of cutlery. This box features bronze hinges and a bronze handle ring. The keyhole is made of copper that was originally silver-plated. The original bronze lock is functional and comes with an antique key.
