Chest Of Drawers Stamped C.i Dufour
Louis XV period chest of drawers stamped C.I DUFOUR. Mid 18th century. This is a small jumper chest of drawers known as "d'entre deux" because it was designed to be placed between two windows. It is veneered with fern-like rosewood friezes in curved violetwood frames, separated by boxwood fillets. The front is curved in plan and elevation, and the sides are curved in plan. The chest of drawers rests on curved legs terminating in sabots. It opens with two drawers, typical of jumping chests. It is topped with royal red marble from Belgium. Finely chased and gilded bronze fittings include falls, sabots, handles, escutcheons and lamp bases. The frames are in oak. The locks are original. The stamped varnish has just been redone.
Stamped by Charles Joseph DUFOUR , Parisian cabinetmaker, born in 1740, obtained his letters of mastery on December 3, 1759. After practicing on rue de Bercy until 1769, he moved to rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine. He mainly produced Louis XV furniture, sometimes of superior quality for a high-ranking clientele. In 1772, he participated as an expert with his colleague Martin Carlin in the after-death inventory of Joseph Baumhauer, the King's privileged cabinetmaker.
