Rene Lalique “florence” Vase - Rare French Art Deco Frosted Glass, Disgned In 1937

Created in 1937 and recorded in Félix Marcilhac’s catalogue raisonné under no. 10-907, the “Florence” vase belongs to René Lalique’s late interwar production, at a moment when the house had fully established its language of moulded glass, satin-finished surfaces and sculptural relief. Designed after the opening of the Wingen-sur-Moder glassworks, the model reflects the mature phase of Lalique’s work, when form, surface treatment and light were used with exceptional control.

The decoration is structured with unusual precision: a central frieze of putti alternating with clear rectangular panels, framed by repeated undulating bands in relief above and below. This contrast between frosted and transparent areas is central to the design, giving the vase a strong architectural rhythm while preserving the softness and diffusion of light for which Lalique became known. The title “Florence” and the use of putti also place the model within a more classically inflected register than many of Lalique’s earlier floral designs, making it a particularly interesting example of his late Art Deco vocabulary.

At 19 cm high, this is the standard size associated with the model. The vase is signed to the base “Lalique France”, confirming its production by the renowned French glassmaker and placing it within the documented René Lalique corpus of the 1930s. The model is well referenced and remains one of the more recognisable figurative designs from Lalique’s mature Art Deco period.

Condition is very good. The vase presents well, with only light wear scratches to the underside/base consistent with age and normal handling. These do not affect the reading of the design or its display quality.
