First Half Of The 19th Century Five Old Paris Plates
Artist: Vecchia Parigi
Refined set of five Old Paris porcelain plates, finely painted and with gilded decorations. The distinctive feature of these plates is the painted depiction, each different, of historical and mythical scenes and figures, revealed on the back with a gilded inscription in French. They include: the death of the Duke of Guise, commander of the Catholic League in the 16th century; Socrates with his finger raised, inspired by the famous painting by David; Marius Curius Dentatus, a symbol of integrity and modesty, who, according to legend, refused gold from the Samnites; Virgil's Shepherd, inspired by the engraving by François Gelée and the painting by Felix Boisselier, which takes inspiration from the famous passage from Virgil's Culex; and finally, the depiction of Belisarius, Justinian's famous general in the 6th century, based on a painting by François Gerard. The plates are also well preserved, and it is a classy and refined set, capable of adding a touch of class to any setting. French manufacture, from the Charles X period, around the first half of the 19th century.
