"Early 17th Century Painting With Tubiolo And The Angel"
Fabulous circular oil painting on walnut panel, housed in a carved wooden frame gilded with gold leaf. The painting depicts a hilly landscape, dotted with architecture and trees. Among these, in the foreground, are two figures identified as Tubiolo and the Archangel Raphael. This is a biblical subject from the Book of Tobit, in which the Archangel Raphael aids Tubiolo on his journey, saving his life more than once. This depiction was also particularly popular during Renaissance Florence, as it was believed to protect young men setting out on journeys. The painting is in good condition and bears the date (1600) and several inscriptions relating to the artist on the back. Florentine manufacture, early 17th century.
