St. Barbara On Wood, 17th–18th Century

Oil on fir wood depicting Saint Barbara, 17th–18th century, Italian or Spanish school.

This elegant depiction of Saint Barbara, virgin and martyr, follows the tradition of Renaissance devotional painting. The saint is depicted standing full-length, wearing a long pearl-gray gown cinched at the waist, covered by a loose, golden-ochre cloak with soft, harmonious folds

The saint is immediately identifiable by her two traditional attributes. To her left is a cylindrical tower, a reminder of the place where her father, Dioscorus, had her imprisoned to shield her from Christian influences. This tower, a symbol of her imprisonment but also of her unshakable faith, is her most characteristic iconographic attribute. In her right hand, she holds a palm branch, the universal emblem of martyrdom and spiritual victory over death.

This panel likely comes from an altarpiece.
