Large Stoneware Bottle – Germany, Creussen, 17th Century
Our large brown-glazed stoneware bottle is characteristic of the pottery produced in Creussen, a small Bavarian pottery town in the 17th century. Its purpose is quite simple: it is the predecessor of the small beer keg. The high-relief decoration, repeated in arched registers, depicts busts of women surmounted by small flowers and clusters of acorns enclosed within stars, likely a heraldic symbol. The original screw capis made of pewter.
This exceptionally rare object is sure to delight collectors of early period artifacts, enthusiasts of cabinets of curiosities, and beer historians.
