Large Carved Wooden Sculpture Of A Jesuit Saint, Signed Th. Koob, Antwerp, 19th Century
Impressive carved wooden sculpture depicting a Jesuit saint, probably Saint Francis Xavier, shown in liturgical garments with his right arm raised in a gesture of preaching or blessing and his left hand turned towards his chest.
The face is finely carved, with a short beard, wavy hair and an expressive gaze. The drapery is particularly well executed, with deep vertical folds, richly carved sleeves and decorative details on the collar, stole and cords.
The sculpture retains traces of its original polychromy and gilding/silvering, with an attractive aged patina and wear consistent with its age. The base bears the incised inscription “TH. KOOB. ANVERS”, referring to a workshop or sculptor active in Antwerp.
A work of strong decorative and historical presence, suitable for a collection of sacred art or as an important decorative piece.
