Jingasa Of The bajō-gasa type (horseman's Helmet), Japan, 19th Century.

Jingasa of the bajō-gasa type (horseman's helmet), Japan, 19th century.

The jingasa is a form of lightweight head protection used by ashigaru foot soldiers on the battlefield and, more broadly, as a travel or service headgear by samurai. Unlike the kabuto, the more elaborate samurai helmet constructed from riveted iron plates, the jingasa was designed to be lighter, more practical, and better suited to the mobility required by contemporary warfare.

Executed in black lacquer with gilt-highlighted ribs, this example features a raised family crest (mon) set within a circular medallion on the front. The crest appears to be the Mitsuba Aoi ("Three Hollyhock Leaves"), composed of three stylized leaves enclosed within a circle. This emblematic mon is traditionally associated with the Tokugawa clan and several related families.

Very good condition overall, with only minor and infrequent losses to the red lacquer on the interior.
