Thun-rva horn formerly used in exorcism rituals, Tibet. 19th century.
The horn is sealed with a carefully fitted wooden stopper, bearing an old wax stamp indicating it had left the country. Its opening is carved in the shape of a makara’s head, through whose mouth seeds or substances used in religious ceremonies and exorcism rites were poured. The body features rich engraved decoration, including a yak, a multi-headed serpent, and a circular medallion depicting the twelve animals of the traditional cycle.
