This type of statue is common on the roads and paths of western Nepal and is often referred to as representing guardians or protective spirits. They are generally found in front of bridges, near springs or houses. Due to their outdoor use, the wood is generally heavily eroded and attacked by wood-boring insects. This statue is no exception.
