18th-century Gilded Venetian Mirror With Carved Cornice And Friezes

An important Venetian mirror made of carved and gilded wood, dating from the 18th century, with remarkable decorative and visual impact. The central section—consisting of a rectangular frame with the main mirror and the supporting structure—features construction and decorative elements characteristic of 18th-century Venetian craftsmanship. The frame is adorned with floral motifs, volutes, and stylized leaves, embellished with an antique gilding that now bears the pleasing marks of the passage of time. The upper cornice, featuring a small shaped mirror, along with the side and lower friezes, complete the composition with an elegant ornamental design. As is often the case with antique furnishings that have survived centuries of use, some decorative elements appear to have been repositioned, added, or restored at a later date, as suggested by certain differences in the shade of the gilding and the appearance of the rear assembly structures. These features attest to the piece’s long life and do not compromise its overall harmony or its strong decorative impact. The main mirror is antique and exhibits widespread oxidation, stains, and loss of the reflective surface, as well as a missing section in one corner. These characteristics attest to its authenticity and natural aging. The back retains an antique wooden structure with original boards, reinforcements, and fastening systems added over time. The ornamental friezes are removable, a feature that allows for easier and safer handling and shipping. Overall condition is good, with wear, restorations, additions, and missing parts consistent with the piece’s age.Dimensions: 128 x 93 cm. A mirror with a striking presence, ideal both in classical settings and as a contrasting element in contemporary contexts.
