Nymphs At The Bath 18th-century French School
Oil on canvas, French school, measuring 83 x 100 cm unframed and 99 x 126 cm framed, depicting nymphs in the water from the mid-18th century.
The composition is highly versatile and intelligently balanced in its use of color, particularly in the continuous contrasts between the very light areas and the slightly darker ones, which reveal the artist’s extraordinary versatility—stemming both from a classical education gained through the study of the great masters by copying plaster models and prints, and from an unbridled passion for color and the ethereal, as evidenced by the strong chromatic impact on the canvas through a clear preference for drawing, in which both the richness of detail and a very methodical and rational arrangement of every single figure or object emerge; this canvas shows us how the painter has made the luminism typical of the great French artists his own, which he was able to study and reinterpret in a completely personal way.
