Vase Of Flowers, Flemish School, From The Second Half Of The 18th Century
Painting oil on canvas measuring 73 x 60 cm unframed and 87 x 75 cm with a period frame, depicting a very fresh still life from the Flemish school of the second half of the 18th century.
This elegant “Vase of Flowers,” consisting of a lush and varied bouquet—featuring carnations, tulips, roses, snowballs, and bluebells—spilling out abundantly from a ceramic vase resting on a stone balustrade, along with three butterflies and a beetle—is a typical example of Flemish painting from the second half of the 18th century, drawing inspiration first from Simon Verelest and later from Jan Van Huysum.
In this delicate canvas as well, Flemish painting successfully showcases its most distinctive qualities, namely immediacy and pictorial freshness, based on a vibrant color palette, well supported by a constructive use of light, which lends an airy quality to its agile and dynamic compositions, featuring elegant displays of refined decorativism and scenographic composition.
