Mali, Circa 1900 : “attic Door Lock”
Malicirca 1900: “Attic door lock,” wood and iron, 42 ×32 × 5 cm (excluding base).
Possibly Dogon or Bambara, but more likely Bamana, this lockshows signs of long-term use, with a local restoration using iron onthe latch, which is secured by a nail that needs to be removed to restore its mobility.
The curious face with rabbit ears that adorns it features a slit that has beenalso reinforced by two nails.
The body is finely engraved with geometric motifs and has a delicate, slightly crusty patina.
An everyday object, yet one that, thanks to the elegance of its carving and its base, can fit just as well in a contemporary interior as in a collection of Primitive Art.
