It is safe to say that this piece originates from theNarmada River in central-western India, where Brahmins collect the pebbles that are then polished to enhance their form.
A phallic symbol of the god Shiva in Hinduism, it is often associated with theYoni, the feminine symbol of the goddess Shakti.
This piece, with its beautiful proportions and orbicular inclusion ofrust agate, is a particularly fine example.
