ABUMI - Pair of wrought-iron stirrups; the upper part is openwork with a stylized flower motif; the interior is lacquered red; the exterior is lacquered in hira-makie depicting facing shishi on a nashiji background adorned with the Tokugawa clan crest and geometric lightning-bolt patterns.
Several cracks in the lacquer.

Comes with a custom-made patinated bronze base.

Notes: Among the samurai, the shishi (or guardian lion) symbolized above all strength, courage, and protection against malevolent influences. Often depicted in armor ornamentation, it embodied the warrior’s constant vigilance in the face of danger and also served as a reminder of the importance of discipline and loyalty, fundamental values of bushido.
