Fireplace Screen, Napoleon III-style Fan-shaped Bronze Fireguard
Like a peacock spreading its tail feathers, thisbronze and brass fireplace screen or fireguard unfolds like a fan.
Four triangularpanels, rounded at the top and made of openwork brass, extend from each sidethe main body of worked bronze. It rests on four legs shaped likeacanthus leaves.
Each leaf of the “fan” slides along aningenious invisible rail system; once folded, the eight leavesare held in place on each side by two small removable bronze pieces thatlock them in position, for example when moving the piece or simply totake up less space.
The central section that holds the leaves isopenwork and is topped by a simple finial.
Napoleon III period, late 19th century.
Height 61 cm; width when open 87 cm – width when folded 17 cm– base width 28 cm
