Roger Dumax, born in 1930 in Paris, is a painterwho works primarily in watercolor and is known for his Provençal landscapes.
Here, on a large canvas one meter long, he choseto depict the harbor of the charming village of Saint Chamas in 1967.
In the foregroundare large boats—the famous “pointus”—with fishermen hard at workwhile others unload their catch of the day in front of a welcoming bistrowith its umbrellas and wide red awning.
In the middle ground arefishermen’s houses and small apartment buildings, and behind them, the bell tower of the 18th-centurySaint-Léger Church.
Finally, in the background, the Baou hill.
Painted with a knife and a broad brush in successive strokesof vivid, nuanced colors ranging from the blue-green of the sea to theblue of a barely overcast Provençal sky.
Oil on canvas, signed lower right “R. DUMAX,” located in St. Chamasand dated 1967.
