Nuremberg 16th Cty, Brass Alms Dish Depicting Urn With Handles, Triton & Mermaid
Artist: Ateliers De Nuremberg (allemagne)
HAUTE EPOQUE
Nuremberg Workshops (Germany)
Mid-15th century
Rare embossed and chiseled brass alms dish, with its center a curious and funny thema of 2 mythological figures:
a woman in the shape of a mermaid and a man, in the shape of a triton with the face of a satyr. Both characters have the lower body shaped like an animal.
The two, facing each other, hold a large urn with gadrooned body and handles shaped like snake and dragon head. The whole scene rests on a phytomorphic decoration.
The central image is surrounded by a circular Gothic inscription band, which seems to be a german inscription "Ich warte der in Friede", which can be translated as "I will take care of you in peace".
The motif on the bottom of the plate ends with a concentric sequence of stamped leaves.
The rim is curved, traditionally resulting from folding the brass plate over a wire, and is decorated with 2 lines of stamped elements in a concentric sequence of stamped leaves, then at the edge a curious pattern between vegetal and architectural (stylised fleurs-de-lys ?)
Good condition, no suspension holes on the plate as was often done,
Very beautiful overall patina.
An alms dish with a similar subject is part of Victoria and Albert Museum collection (Art No.: 44-1907), in London.
Dimensions:
40,3 cm diameter and 4 cm deep.
Weight: 1381g
