Clock with Masonic symbols, late 18th century,early 19th century.
A rare and elegant clock in finely chiseled and gilded bronze,resting on a stepped rectangular base adorned with a lion’s mask andhanging garlands.
The whole is mounted on a molded wooden plinthaccented with gilded bronze.The circular dial, a blue-ground cartouche enhanced withpolychrome floral motifs, is surrounded by a rich gilded bronze frame decorated withleaves and flowers.
It features enameled cartouches indicating the hoursin Roman numerals. The openwork gilded bronze hands are of greatfinesse of execution.
The top is crowned with an armillary sphere symbolizinguniversal knowledge and cosmic harmony. On either side of thebase are several Masonic attributes, including the square, thecompass, and measuring instruments, emblems of moral rectitude, wisdom,and spiritual perfection.
This iconographic ensemble clearly placesthis clock within the tradition of productions inspired by Freemasonry thatenjoyed great success in the late 18th century.
Thanks to the quality of its gilding, the richness of itssymbolic decoration, and the originality of its composition, this clock is aremarkable example of neoclassical decorative clockmaking linked to theMasonic world.
