Engraved soapstone bead amulet – 2nd millennium BCE – archaeology, Egyptology

Rare amulet-bead in the shape of a rectangular plaque, carved from soapstone and dating from the 2nd millennium B.C.

One side features an engraved composition depicting two four-legged animals flanked by two stylized human figures. The other side is adorned with a geometric design consisting of parallel striations. A perforation allowed the object to be suspended.

This type of amulet could be carried on one’s person or attached to a necklace to provide protection. Its apotropaic function was also exercised in a funerary context, where it could accompany the deceased as a protective talisman.

An antique object of high-quality engraving and genuine archaeological interest, appraised by Jean-Sylvain Caillou.

Dimensions: 1.9 cm on the longest side.

In good condition with wear consistent with its age.
