Notes on the artist: Arno Lemke was a German painter active during the 20th century, best known for his alpine and mountain landscapes, inspired by the regions of Bavaria and Tyrol. His training is rooted in the Central European painting tradition, where direct observation of nature and painting from life form the foundation of the artistic language.Throughout his career, Lemke devoted himself almost exclusively to landscape painting, favoring high-mountain subjects: rocky massifs, snow-capped peaks, alpine valleys, and wooded vistas. In his work, the mountain is never merely a backdrop but the absolute protagonist, interpreted as a living, ever-changing organism subject to light and weather conditions.
His stylistic signature is distinguished by an energetic and textured brushstroke, often applied with a palette knife, which lends solidity and physical presence to the rocky surfaces. At the same time, Lemke demonstrates a particular chromatic sensitivity in his treatment of skies and distant landscapes, rendered with light glazes and atmospheric tones capable of expanding spatial depth.
Arno Lemke’s works enjoyed widespread popularity in the European art market, particularly in Germany and the Alpine countries, where they were well-received by collectors with a tradition of landscape art. Even today, his paintings are appreciated for the balance between naturalistic fidelity and pictorial interpretation, qualities that make his Alpine landscapes recognizable and highly decorative.
