French School, Circa 1850 – Young Roman Woman At The Entrance To A Church

Artist: Ecole Française Vers 1850
French school circa 1850
Young Roman woman at the entrance to a church
Oil on canvas
H. 60 cm; W. 48 cm

Although this work from the heart of the 19th century remains anonymous today, it is nonetheless comparable to the works of French artists who spent extended periods in Italy, such as Dominique Papety, Achille Bénouville, Jules Etna Michallon, etc.

More accustomed to these portraits presented as simple sketches or set in a sunny landscape, this composition initially unsettles us with the dark tones of the background. This painting is no longer really a portrait but a scene, showing us a young Roman woman entering a church, dipping her fingertips in the holy water font before making the sign of the cross. The light streaming in from the left of the composition and the woman’s movement straddling the two levels of steps give the work a sense of rhythm.
