Fruits and (especially) flowers were the credo of Georges Jeannin, who tirelessly exhibited them at the Paris Salon from the end of the Second Empire (1868) until his death. He depicted them in all their forms and in all contexts: bouquets, arrangements, baskets, vases, wheelbarrows, greenhouses, gardens, simple studies… always with a vibrant and lively palette, and often a vigorous brushstroke. Awarded several times at the Salon, he received the Legion of Honor in 1903, the State purchased many of his works, and he is now very well represented in museums, notably the Musée d'Orsay and the Petit Palais. A member of the National Horticultural Society of France, he was also a professor at the Academy of Floral Arts. In this painting dedicated to a friend, Jeannin adopts A very dense composition and a particularly appealing low-angle viewpoint. A true "Living Nature," it is one of the very rare works where the artist allows the sky to appear.
