Carl Schlichting-carlsen (1842-1931) The Painter's Rest Denmark
Artist: Carl Schlichting-carlsen
Carl SCHLICHTING-CARLSEN
(Flensburg 1842 – Hellebæk 1931)
The Painter's Rest
Oil on canvas
H. 130 cm; W. 93 cm
Signed and dated lower left – S. Carlsen (18)94
This artist of German origin spent most of his life in Denmark, where he pursued his career as a painter. From 1872 he presented works at the Charlottenborg Salon, mainly Danish landscapes, animated, or interior scenes or even lively portraits. He also produced views of Italy, notably Rome and Capri, of which very luminous works are preserved in museums in Copenhagen.
Our canvas, which he produced at around fifty years old, is a large illuminated format, representing an easel abandoned by its painter, who is in the background resting next to a woman. Is it a self-portrait of the artist, or the portrait of one of his painter friends?
