Born in the Ain region, Fonville arrived in Lyon in 1820 to work for a lithographic printer, who also arranged for him to train with Alexandre Thierriat. After taking a few more lessons with Antoine Duclaux, Fonville, who had specialized in landscape painting, left for Rome, passing through Provence, to meet up with his fellow Lyonnais, Isidore Flacheron and Antoine Guindrand. He stayed there for a year, and upon his return in 1830, he married his employer's daughter and founded a landscape painting studio, which would continue to employ around twenty students.
An extremely prolific artist, even though he only exhibited twice at the Paris Salon in 1833 and 1840, his favorite subjects were views of Lyon and its surroundings, the Forez, Bresse, and Bugey regions, but he also painted the Dauphiné and Drôme regions, as well as Switzerland. A painting exhibited at the 1841 Lyon exhibition, located in Honfleur, reveals that he had even traveled as far as Normandy. He participated in all the Lyon exhibitions from 1836 until his death.
A proponent and advocate of plein air painting among his students, Fonville loved to depict a serene, bucolic, and almost Arcadian nature in a classical yet always harmonious style.
His son, Horace Antoine (1832-1914), also enjoyed a successful career as a landscape painter.
