La Sainte-Victoire, watercolor signed Marcel Arnaud, born in Marseille on October 8, 1877 and died in
Aix-en-Provence on March 18, 1956.

History:
In 1895, Marcel Arnaud went to Paris, where he worked on theater sets while studying the
ancient masters at the Louvre museum. He makes the acquaintance of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle in
Paris. He meets Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) in Marseille and paints several works in his
presence. He exhibited in several regional salons and with the painter Jean-Baptiste Olive.
In 1914, he was appointed professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d'Aix-en-Provence, then became
director from 1917 to 1946.
His great friend John Rewald wrote:
"Marcel Arnaud brings to painting the Cézannienne continuity that time has not left to
Paul Cézanne".
He also became curator of the Granet museum in Aix-en-Provence from 1926 to 1954.
He exhibited in Marseille and Aix-en-Provence until his death in 1956.
