THE ARTIST
Mirko Orlandini, whose full first name is Elio Mirko Orlandini, was born in 1928 in Ancona, Italy. He trained in industrial studies and then at the Ravenna Academy in the mosaic section under Professor Signorini. He moved permanently to Brussels in 1956, where he attended the Académie de Céramique de Charleroi and then the Académie d'Etterbeek in Brussels, where he became a teacher.
Beginning in 1960, he exhibited regularly in group and solo shows. In 1974-1975, he was part of the MANUS group, an artists' collective featuring two painters, a sculptor and an engraver: Bebeonne, Muller, Orlandini, Smolders and Van Lange.
In 1978, he won the Premio Faenza at the 36th International Art Ceramics Competition in Faenza, with a 48.5 cm-high work in glazed stoneware. This is one of the world's most prestigious awards in contemporary art ceramics.
His style is characterized by the realization of simple, vigorous plastic forms, whose coloristic value is highlighted by the material and glaze.
In 1980, his work appeared in the retrospective exhibition of post-war Belgian ceramics at the Théâtre National in Brussels, alongside such great names as Pierre Caille, Carmen Dionyse and Antoine de Vinck. In 1982, he is presented at the Foire de Nîmes by Galerie La Main.
In 1997, a year after his death, Galerie Traces in Hastière-par-delà paid tribute to him with an exhibition entitled "Le silence pétrifié", shared with Antoine de Vinck.

ARTISTIC CONTENT AND INTEREST
This vase was made in 1970, during Orlandini's period of full artistic maturity, eight years before he won the Premio Faenza. It is in keeping with the main lines of his work: pure forms, in this case the sphere, enhanced by the use of materials and glazes. The ball form is one of the most classic and demanding expressions of art ceramics, as it requires perfect mastery of throwing and rigorous high-temperature firing of the stoneware.
The presence of the artist's stamp and precise dating are solid elements of authenticity, reinforced by the piece's excellent state of preservation.
