Description: This pair of Ibeji sculptures comes from the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. Ibeji represent sacred twins, central figures in Yoruba cosmology, where twin births are associated with prosperity, protection, and spiritual balance. When a twin died, a statue was carved to serve as a vessel for their spirit and to maintain harmony within the family. These figures were the subject of regular ritual care, which explains the old patina and visible signs of wear. The sculpture is distinguished by balanced proportions, a restrained stylization, and a formal presence characteristic of ancient Yoruba art. The Ibeji constitute one of the most emblematic collections of traditional African art and are particularly sought after by collectors and institutions for their cultural and symbolic importance.
